Stud & Hub Cleaning Instructions
This page explains how to properly use Stud Kleen® tools to clean wheel studs and hubs. Stud And Hub Pros is an official distributor of Stud Kleen®, supporting professional tire shops, fleets, and heavy-duty service operations.
Use It Right — Make It Last
- Let the tool do the work — do not force it
- Always rotate in the correct direction
- Use light to moderate pressure only
- Keep the tool straight on the stud
- Clean debris from the tool after each use
- Avoid excessive RPM or torque
- Stop immediately if the tool binds — reposition and continue
When used correctly, Stud Kleen tools are designed for long service life in professional shop environments.
Let the Tool Do the Work
When cleaning wheel studs, allow the tool to naturally pull itself onto the threads. Avoid forcing the tool or applying unnecessary pressure.
Rotate onto the stud: Rotate the tool clockwise. It will pull itself onto most threads until the abrasive face contacts the rotor or hub surface.
Rotate off the stud: Rotate the tool counterclockwise to remove it. The tool will back itself off smoothly once cleaning is complete.
Why Cleaning Studs and Hubs Matters
Proper stud and hub cleaning supports accurate torque and safe wheel installation. Torque is the twisting force applied to a lug nut to create bolt tension. That tension creates clamping force, which secures the wheel to the vehicle.
Because clamping force cannot be measured directly in the field, technicians rely on clean mating surfaces and correct torque procedures. Rust, corrosion, or debris can lead to inaccurate torque readings and improper wheel seating.
Follow the RIST Procedure
Industry best practices recommend following the RIST procedure during wheel service:
- R — Remove debris from mating surfaces
- I — Inspect all studs, nuts, and components
- S — Snug lug nuts in the proper sequence
- T — Torque fasteners to specification
